Learning at Home

Kindergarten – Year 2: Learning at Home

Our Sawyers Valley Early Childhood team would firstly like to extend our very best wishes to all of our children and our families as they spend more time at home during this phase of their learning journey. Your child’s wellbeing and holistic development is our highest priority. What our children need now is to feel comforted and loved and feel like everything is going to be ok. Our K-2 educators are unified in their belief that play is the vehicle for all learning. This can be through inquiry, exploration of the environment, conversation, interaction and a balance of child initiated and adult guided experiences, both planned and spontaneous.

Remember you are their first educators and they learnt so much from you before they arrived at any other educator’s door. You probably didn’t even realise how much they were learning and flourishing. Embrace this time when their needs, interests and uniqueness can be the centre of every learning experience.Read More

Be patient with your children and be mindful of the pace and way they like to learn. If things get too frustrating, then leave it for another time. We foster a holistic approach at Sawyers Valley whereby we nurture each child’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development in unison. Look after their wellbeing and your own. Please keep in mind that when these uncertain weeks are over, their mental health will be paramount and how they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did.

At Sawyers Valley Primary School, we integrate the learning areas into the experiences and routines that we provide each day. Each class teacher will be providing overviews of experiences and activities that you will be able to create within your home environments. These will be posted onto Class Dojo so please ensure that you check this when you can. The teachers will also be checking regularly to respond to posts from you and your children. We will be using this platform to maximise the level of interaction between home and school.

These are some recommended daily activities:

  • Read to your child.
  • Encourage them to help with chores around the home.
  • Spend lots of time outside and take part in some physical activity.
  • Converse with your child about how they are feeling, what they know and what they would like to learn.
  • Allow time for your child to rest and take part in quiet activities.
  • Allow for some independent time where they can create, build and imagine.
